Tie My Shoe

Putting the last dish away, Buck hung the dishtowel to dry and headed toward the mud room to get his boots on. Chris and Vin had headed out to the barn earlier and JD had asked permission to go outside to play with the dogs.

It was with some surprise that the ladies' man found his son sitting on the steps of the porch, arms hugging Elvis tightly, soft sobs escaping every now and then. Sitting next to the boy who had become the center of his world, Buck rested a hand on the small back. "JD, son, what happened?"

Reluctantly, JD lifted his head from where it was resting in Elvis' fur. With a mighty sniff, he replied, "I tied my shoes by myself."

A proud smile crossed Buck's face. They had been struggling for a while to teach JD to tie his shoes. That he had finally succeeded was a wonderful accomplishement. "But that's great news, buddy. Why the tears?" he asked, puzzled.

Another sob escaped JD before he explained, "Now I'll have to tie my shoes by myself everyday for the rest of my life!"
